EG4 Chargeverter GC Stopped Working: Our Replacement and What EG4 Documents
Our Chargeverter GC stopped working and was replaced. What we did, and what EG4's manual says about the Chargeverter Plus.

What the manufacturer documents
- EG4's Chargeverter Plus manual, version 1.0.3 (model CU-48-5000-OD-01), lists an adjustable charge current of 0 to 100 A at 240 V, 0 to 50 A at 120 V and 0 to 80 A at 208 V, with a maximum output of 5120 W at 240 V and 2560 W at 120 V. (eg4electronics.com)
- The manual lists an adjustable charge voltage of 40 to 60 V with a default of 57 V, and its changelog says version 1.0.3 changed the default charging voltage to 57 V. (eg4electronics.com)
- The manual lists ingress protection IP54, which it describes as protection from dust and small amounts of splashing water, and an operating altitude of 0 to 9843 ft (0 to 3000 m). (eg4electronics.com)
- The manual lists the warranty as 3 years, only when used indoors, and points to EG4's warranty registration page. (eg4electronics.com)
- The manual has a troubleshooting section covering no AC power, no DC power, no battery communication, no amperage, no voltage and dry-contact communication. It says faults appear on the main display with no alarm or sound, and to contact the distributor if warnings persist. (eg4electronics.com)
- The manual describes dry contacts on the right side of the unit for controlling a generator, using battery state of charge if the charger communicates with the battery and battery voltage if it does not. (eg4electronics.com)
- The manual lists maintenance intervals: a monthly generator inspection, a periodic fan-filter check, a check of operating parameters every 3 months and a check of cables and terminals every 6 months. (eg4electronics.com)
- In its section on environmental factors the manual says to mount the unit where it is not exposed to direct rain, standing water or direct sunlight, and on non-combustible material. (eg4electronics.com)
What happened to us
- Our second-generation Chargeverter GC, a 5 kW unit, stopped charging entirely, with no output and no error, a few months before the Chargeverter Plus was released. We troubleshot it with EG4, changing voltages and settings and checking versions, and could not find the cause. (The failure details are the owner's recollection.) (video)
- Signature Solar's support gave us a credit toward the new Chargeverter Plus for the failed unit (the credit giver is the owner's confirmation). TGBATG earns commissions as a Signature Solar affiliate. (video)
- We installed the Chargeverter Plus using the power cord and battery cables from the failed GC. We mounted it with a small gap behind it for airflow. (video)
- The Chargeverter Plus is installed indoors (the owner's confirmation). (video)
- For the first charge we set the voltage start threshold to 43 V, the voltage stop threshold to 55 V and the charge current to 95 A, without battery communication or the generator control cable. These are the thresholds of this setup, not recommendations. The output reached about 94.5 A. The state of charge showed as lost because communication was not used. (video)
- The Chargeverter Plus is slightly larger than the failed GC; the video shows the two side by side. (video)
What EG4's manual lists compared with what we did
| Point | What EG4's manual lists | What we did or said |
|---|---|---|
| Charge current | 0 to 100 A at 240 V, 0 to 50 A at 120 V, 0 to 80 A at 208 V | Set to 95 A; the output reached about 94.5 A |
| Charge (output) voltage | 40 to 60 V, default 57 V (version 1.0.3) | The output voltage setting was not recorded |
| Start and stop thresholds | The manual describes voltage thresholds that start and stop charging when battery communication is not used | Start 43 V and stop 55 V for the first charge (this setup, not recommendations) |
| Ingress protection | IP54 | We said IP54 early in the video and IP67 later |
| Where to mount it | Out of direct rain and sunlight, on non-combustible material; warranty only when used indoors | We said a covered outdoor spot would be fine; ours is installed indoors |
| A unit that stops working | The manual has a troubleshooting section and says to contact the distributor | Ours stopped charging with no output and no error; we changed settings and checked versions with EG4, then received a credit toward the replacement |
What we did not verify
- We do not know why our Chargeverter GC stopped working, and EG4 and we did not find the cause.
- The manual we cite is version 1.0.3, whose changelog is dated June 2026. Our video is from April 2026, so the manual that came with our unit may have differed.
- In the video we described the case as IP54 early on and as IP67 later. The manual we read lists IP54.
- Our first charge used voltage thresholds only. We did not use battery communication or the generator control cable, and we have not tested long-term use.
- We said in the installation video that generator power with a distorted waveform can damage electronics such as inverters. We did not test this, and the manual we read does not state it.
- In the video we said a covered outdoor spot would be fine. Our unit is installed indoors; the manual lists the 3-year warranty only when used indoors, and we have not checked the warranty terms that applied to our unit.
- We did not record the amount or terms of the credit for the failed unit.
Questions and answers
What charge current does EG4's manual list for the Chargeverter Plus?
Up to 100 A at 240 V, 50 A at 120 V and 80 A at 208 V, according to version 1.0.3.
What ingress rating does the manual list?
IP54, which the manual describes as protection from dust and small amounts of splashing water.
Is the warranty valid outdoors?
The manual lists the 3-year warranty only when used indoors. Ask EG4 or your seller about the terms for your unit.
Why did our Chargeverter GC fail?
We do not know. We changed voltages and settings and checked versions with EG4 and could not find the cause.
