Hey, what's going on guys? Welcome back to the channel. On this episode, we're going to do a quick uh short video pretty much about this EcoFlow 314 amp hour battery. Uh we just bought this battery.
I'm not sure if you've seen the other posts or other shorts that we kind of put up or whatnot. But right now, we are doing the first capacity test, at least for us, uh of this 314 amp hour battery using this Victron system. So, uh this EcoFlow 314 amp hour battery right now is connected to the system pushing out about 154 amps. It's pushing out uh through the Lynx Power In, the Victron Smart Shunt right there, and to these Victron Quattro inverters.
They're set up in split phase pushing to a 50 amp receptacle right there. And then that 50 amp receptacle is charging a Tesla that's outside, which you obviously can't see cuz we're inside the garage and it's closed. So, uh there are other batteries connected to the system, but obviously as you can tell, they're all off. So, the only battery that's on with power pushing uh connected is going to be uh this EcoFlow 314 amp hour battery.
So, uh we're going to come back later and talk about pretty much how well this battery did in its capacity test uh so far because if this battery is true to capacity, uh considering how much we paid for it, which I don't remember the exact numbers. I'll see if I can throw up a screenshot somewhere uh on the screen here how much we paid. But if this is truly 314 amp hours, and for the price that we paid, this battery is a bargain, all right? There are a few things we do wish that were going to be improved on this battery.
And since we got a little bit of time to talk about this capacity, let's go and talk about that real quick. So, the first thing I obviously want to point out is that first, it only has one set of terminals to connect power, okay? Um which is these quick connect terminals. And these quick connect terminals, they're not entirely proprietary.
I'm just using the word proprietary here primarily because these terminals are not the same as the EG4 uh Dexon terminals, the ones that come on the indoor batteries and the Power Pros and those systems, right? So, trying to use those connectors do not work here. The reason that, you know, I'm pointing that out is because the wires that they sent are two gauge cuz you hear two gauge uh wire for 200 uh degrees Celsius rated. So, sure, two gauge wire, short run, especially if it's like DC uh uh silicon and or welding cable for a short run, you can run a lot of amperage, okay?
But, most people, if you're going to be pushing, you know, capacity of 314 amp hours at even like definitely not one C, but you know, at some current amount of system, you're going to probably place somewhere around maybe 150, maybe 200. Some people may try to push it, but I think it's got a a discharge rating, if I remember correctly, somewhere around 200 amps, okay? Uh the breaker that's on here, the DC rated breaker, is I think uh 200 rated for 250 amps, uh but even if you come close to pushing 200 amps or 250 amps, do you think two gauge wire is going to be is going to cut it or if it's good enough? No, I'm going to go with you might get away with it for a short time, short run.
Just touching it right now, it's definitely warm. I wish I had a heat gun in here so I could show you the temperature of this, but it's definitely a bit warm and we're only pushing 154 amps. Sure, it's not warm like 200 degrees warm, but it could definitely benefit from using let's just say uh one aught wire. Or what would we would really like to see is two aught wire.
Obviously, just like the ones that come in the Power Pros, those are two aught wire. So, um if we could get those in this, it would definitely be great. I kind of understand a little bit why they want kind of go with these. These wires are going to be, you know, significantly cheaper, especially at this gauge.
Um, but at the price that we paid for this battery, you know, I'm not going to complain too much. The other problem I see immediately with this battery is that there's only one set here, and which is what I said earlier, but the problem with the one set is that you can't really uh parallel multiple batteries together on this battery uh by itself. You can parallel them together if you get like a bus bar and all that kind of thing, but you know, that's more stuff you got to deal with. So, uh I'm going to see later if we can probably change these connectors out, or maybe there's enough room inside of this battery that we can uh either add like another one, another set of connector, or something like that.
But I really don't like um these connectors. I would much rather just have lugs so that you can put whatever wires you want to get on them, right? So, uh that's primarily the main issue, but the second issue I want to point out with this battery is that look at this bezel. This is a nice screen, first of all.
Um, the pixel density is not great, but it's a nice, colorful screen. It's generally pretty responsive, right? Um, it's got a good amount of colors, and it tells you everything you need to know, okay? But look at this screen.
Do you know what I'm talking about? Look at this thick of this thickness of this bezel right here. Then, which is not the same as the thickness of this bezel right here. Why is that thickness not the same as this thickness?
And why is this thickness not the same as this thickness? Look at that. This thickness not the same as There's four different kinds of thicknesses on this bezel, all right? So, I don't know who put this thing together, but that just looks shabby.
You can definitely, you know, for a finished product that's on the market, that's definitely something that can be improved. So, you know, like I said, this is just preliminary review. Uh we're going to have to open it up after especially we do the capacity test and all that stuff. But right now, I just want to give you a preliminary view of this battery.
It is nice, especially for the price that we paid for it. Um if it stays true to its capacity, that's going to be a steal. It does come uh with these uh heavy-duty metal casters. That's really nice.
They're already, if I remember correctly, I think they're already installed when I take them out when I took them out of the uh uh unboxing uh crate. So, that's really nice. 1% left, all right? Uh we just caught it uh at the end of it.
I did turn the discharge rate all the way down and I checked the Victron Smart Shunt before shooting this, and we've already passed 315 amp hours. So, if the question is, does this battery provide the rated capacity at least, okay, at least the rated capacity? Do you answer to that seems to be yes, because we passed 314, and we're already at 1%. We've got a few warnings here.
It's probably going to complain about, if I had to guess, uh low state charge or something like that. But, this is a great battery. Look at it. It's metal case, heavy-duty casters.
It's got the 314 amp hour rated capacity, if not more. It comes with, you know, some cables that could probably use a few improvements. The screen is nice, besides the bezel. But this thing is a steal.
So, taking a closer look at this battery, this is the left-hand side of the battery if you're looking at it from the front. It's got uh double breaker here. It looks like each one is maybe about 125 amps. So, this is a 250 amp DC rated breaker.
It's got the quick connects here, as we talked about earlier. The reset button, which is recessed, you're going to have to use a pencil or something to push that in. Dip switches, dry contacts, 485 port, CAN bus, 232 RS485 in and RS485 out. So, if you want to parallel, you probably have to use that port right there.
It's got a state of charge indicator right here, run, alarm, on, off, and this right here is obviously the switch, which I think would have been pretty obvious even if they didn't label that. But, if you wanted to connect it to Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, there is a separate app for this, not the EcoWorth app for all the other, you know, regular car battery size batteries, but there's a separate app for this battery alone. Um so, obviously, specs here. Uh other thing to point out on here is that there is a grounding lug port right here.
So, if you want you need to ground the battery, uh that's where you would do that. Uh these ports right here are for the L brackets in case you wanted to mount not not to mount it to the wall, but to secure it to a wall or some fixture. So, that if you had it leaned up against something, you could secure it that way it doesn't roll around. You do not mount a battery this heavy using these, okay?
Uh so, there's one on uh two sets here, another two sets right there, and then also on the other side there is a set right there. So, before we open it up, I want to take a look at this. As you can see right here, this connector right here is the uh quick connect that goes onto the battery here, obviously. Uh this is obviously only the uh negative side, but this is the with Lena connector right there.
And like I said earlier, this is two-gauge wire. So, two-gauge wire for a battery that can do maybe 200 amps out. Yeah, this is not properly sized for that connection. Um so, you see here, it's got the lug right here.
It's crimped on pretty well. I'm not going to cut it open and take it apart cuz I don't want to have to recrimp it again, but it's a pretty good silicone 200 uh degree Celsius rated wire. And like I said, goes right here. It does not connect to the uh power plug connectors as you would see from the EG4 batteries because those look like this, okay?
Not sure if you can see that right there, but it's just slightly bigger than that one. So, if you try to do that right here, even though it looks like it may fit, it won't. It will not. So, check that out.
It won't go past that lug or past this. You may be able to sand, I don't know, grind it off or whatnot, put it on there, but I'm not going to go ahead and do that. If anything, what we may do in the future is maybe see if we can mount one of these inside here depending on how much space there is. Not to say that we will, but you know, just wanted to point that out.
So, don't expect to quick connect these to uh the sets here. Uh you could probably chomp this off and put something like the connector on here on there if you wanted to do that, but you know, that's additional work we don't really want to have to do. So, my problem with these quick connects is essentially that you have to use uh these connectors. I think this battery probably would have done better if they just put like lugs so you could just, you know, connect your own wires up there, but I think nowadays in the market a lot of people, especially just getting in, are going to really want these quick connects, but if they had another way, they just had a lug right here where we can also parallel things, that would be great, too.
Obviously, that's going to be an additional cost, so you could probably understand why they did not do that. >> [snorts] >> Looking at it just a little bit closer, as you can see here, this is the screen, the wires are here, it's got the four conductors, it's glued in there, even the uh screws that mount this board to this front panel are also glued in as well. So, they really don't want you to take that off or maybe they just don't want to fall down in shipping. Obviously, don't do something like that, but you know, what can you do?
Uh it's got a sensor right there. It's got the fiber board here. If you look at the wire, not sure if you're going to be able to see it. We'll bring you in just a little bit closer.
Also, taking a look at the inside, you can see it's actually built pretty well. It's got this bracing cross bracing here. The vent holes are not covered. Uh that's obvious.
Cross bracing here. So, this is actually good cuz that structural structural bracing right here and it goes down to the metal part here, which is built actually on a cage. So, it looks like this whole build right here is a cage cuz that's metal. This is metal.
So, it's got a metal cage here and another metal cage here. Uh it's got the batteries uh laid out this way and obviously they're going, you know, in series like this. So, that's interesting. It's got all the balance leads here.
Looks like they are spot welded together. Uh not bolted down. The wire management's good cuz it looks like there's a little trough right here uh between this piece of plastic and this piece of plastic. It's actually one piece of plastic with a trough right there for the wire management to go.
So, that's actually really nice. It's got a NTC here uh and a NTC here and more NTCs right here and here. So, that's actually pretty good. Uh that that's really nice.
It's got a parallel conductor here, which the parallel conductor is actually bolted down. Uh SC506. So, that's actually pretty nice and they've also additionally got the uh wrapping the protective wrapping with the uh heat protectant on here as well. So, positive uh parallel connection here and um it's got the two negative ones here.
It's got two smaller wires that look It looks like that goes off of here uh into the bus bar system BMS that goes there. It's got the positive here. The positive looks like it goes around down there to the breaker and bus bar right there. Probably need to bring you around to the other side so you can take a good look at that bus bar.
But, the build seems to be really nice because as you can hear there, that's a pretty nice build. Um it looks like it's all metal. It's got the strapping here, fiber boards here, uh the battery's here, but you can't really uh see it. In order to see what batteries and cells they're actually using, going to have to take this apart, and that seems to be you know, something we should probably do, but you know, today is a Saturday morning, and I'm not sure if I'm feeling up for that.
All right, so you're going to have to forgive the uh shaky camera because we are doing it without the uh tripod. See, look at that. The wires are actually managed pretty well. It's got the nice wrapping.
They're zip tied. They're done pretty well. Spot welds are pretty good. The contact sensors are pretty good.
You can see here, everything is bolted down nicely. Uh you can see here the negative conductors here, positive conductors here. The The uh connection lugs are pretty good. Looks like that's been checked, QC'd, and torqued down, it looks like.
Um if you go take a look at down here, which is, you know, really hard to see, uh the positive connector goes to this bus bar-looking thing, which connects to this um uh breaker here. So, this is the uh breaker right here, and it's actually got the two inputs, as you can see right here, one here and one there, and it's kind of going from that bus bar itself. So, that comes down to this but uh BMS system here. Um even these are glued down as well, so that these uh wires here don't come come off the uh control board.
So, everything is glued down pretty well. I mean, maybe they learned some lessons from uh shipping damage and stuff, but I do not expect these uh conductors or connections to come off anytime soon. It's got a pretty big heat shrink there. Yes, we're tapping everything with this thing.
Uh don't do that, but you know, this is one of those things where I say, "Do as I we say, not as we do. " So, uh that's pretty nice cuz if you look at that, this BMS looks like it's replaceable if you really needed to. It's going to be a good amount of work to replace this, but it looks like you could pretty much replace that. See if I can get a better model number or something of that BMS, but I can't really read that from here.
Uh you can look at the FETs. The FETs are right there. Uh it's got a nice roll of FETs. Actually, that's a lot of FETs there, so yeah, hopefully you won't have to replace this anytime soon cuz, you know, that's that's not going to be a lot of fun.
Um or maybe you define fun differently. But as you can see here, the uh board that connects the front part right here, you can see daylight through it from the other side, right? So, this part right here, you know, it's not tied in. It would be nice if the LEDs were sticking out a bit uh here and here, which means dust and, you know, light water spray would probably get in there, but this thing is not designed to be uh water resistant.
I'm just pointing out the fact that, you know, it's not really super tight right there. Uh the other thing you can see here is that if we can get this thing to focus, come on, focus. Um the connections are actually right there. See, you see that positive connection there and that negative connection down there.
Looks like it's being done also by the same gauge wire, which looks like a two gauge wire almost, or maybe that's a six gauge. Uh probably have to take that apart and put it back together, but if you wanted to replace that connector, that quick connector, it looks like it could be done assuming if the holes were right. So, maybe that's something we can look into. Uh looks like there is enough space.
I mean, considering if you physically say that's enough space, you could probably get the other uh quick connect in there in case you want to mount that in, but seems to be like a good amount of effort there. So, it may be possible. Maybe that's something we'll maybe explore. But if you're looking at the build, the build's pretty good.
The battery cells are definitely bigger slightly bigger than the ones that we we've seen in some of the other batteries. So maybe we'll take a good look at it and see what we can find out. But it's got the expansion little hump here, which is good. So you know, I don't think this battery's going to have too much of an issue.
The only thing I could see probably going wrong with this is maybe something went wrong with the BMS as most of them usually would be pretty good. But look at the crimp and the connection there. That's a glue. That's glue right there.
What they have spot welded 1 2 3 4 5 6 spot welds right there. And it's also connected with this adhesive glue here. So they got this NTC connected here pretty well. I don't think this is going to have a problem anytime soon.
Yeah, so that actually seems like a pretty good battery, especially if you consider this thing was 1765 delivered. What I mean by that is for 1765, which is what we paid for this thing on eBay, and I just checked again today as as right before filming this, you can get this battery for around 1850, I think, right now at the time of this recording. But there was some sale or something going on. So I think we paid about 1765 for this battery, which is I would call it a steal cuz that's about as low as we've seen something like this, right?
So this is a 51. 2 aka 48-volt 314 amp hour battery, okay? So the server rack batteries that you see most of the ones in the market, they're going to be roughly around 100 amp hours each, and each one of those are going to let's just say somewhere around 1,000 bucks, right? Cuz you got some of the premium ones, and then you got some more like the budget ones.
Budget ones may be like $700, right? Or $800, something like that. Some of the more premium or higher-end ones are going to be like 12 13 1400, right? So and those are 100 milli or 100 amp hours.
So even if you get the budget one, let's just call it like 800 bucks, right? $800 budget one. In order to get to 300, you would have to get three of those. 8 * 3, that's 24.
So, you would need to pay roughly around $2,400 of budget server rack batteries to come close. That's not even 314, that's 300 amp hours of this. So, getting something like this for 1765 or however much you probably can pay for it right now, it's going to be like 1800. It's actually a steal.
So, take that away, all right? Let's take that away. Wait, let's just say it's um 1800. You divide that by three.
So, that means you would need to find three server rack batteries for about 600 bucks, okay? Each, delivered in order to get the cost of this, right? So, if you take into account, you know, the three batteries you would need to get and then you would need to parallel them up and you probably have to establish communication Well, you don't have to establish communications, but you know, extra wiring costs and stuff like that. This battery is definitely worth it if you can handle a floor-standing battery.
Okay? So, for a server rack battery, uh you probably can't see it here. You probably want to get a rack or a cabinet or something like that. Then you have to tie them together, stuff like that, lift them into place or whatnot.
But, you know, that's going to take up real estate or space, okay? So, yes, I agree. For like a guaranteed amount of actual floor space, not volume, you can stack a good amount of server rack batteries. But, in the space you would stack, let's just start stacking server rack batteries, you could probably fit two of these, okay?
So, you know, a server rack cabinet will take about six six server rack batteries on average, you know, they're all different. Uh but, you can In that same space, you could just roll two of these in as well. So, uh what I would say, what would really like to see improved on this is going to really be the connections and the wiring, okay? Two-gauge wiring for a battery that can do 200 amps continuous out is not great.
It's okay, but it's not great. So, if they could improve that and add just normal lugs for the battery connections, that would be really nice. The screen, like I said, screen responsiveness is nice, it looks nice, it's colorful. The pixel density is not great by any means, but you know, it looks nice.
Mounting the screen on some, you know, odd shape look something that looks like they put it together last minute, and that's going to be something as well. But, you know, for 1765, you cannot complain. This seems to be a really good steal. So, like I said, this is not a wall-mount battery like you see here.
You see these are wall-mounted batteries. They can be wall-mounted, they can be floor-standing. These are only floor-standing. They come with casters attached, which like I said, these are pretty standard casters, pretty good casters.
For the next series, it's the same casters that come on the EG4 server rack, right? Not the wall-mount batteries, but it rolls around. So, these casters aren't cheap, either. But, this battery is pretty heavy.
So, if you're going to get this, make sure you have a good way to move it around because if you're working by yourself, that's going to be a hefty lift. So, short answer, TLDR, would I recommend going out and buying this battery? Without being a battery expert, but with enough experience using batteries to answer with that would be yes. How did it stand up in the long term?
We're going to add it to our system. We're just going to have to cycle it multiple times and see how it really goes, but I don't see anything really terrible happening to it. Even if it did, which highly unlikely, then you could probably just buy another one considering how much you actually saved, right? So, I know EG4 also makes a 314 amp hour battery.
That one obviously is not 1765. So, you know, you're going to have to compare what you need to do with what you need to do, all right? Sometimes convenience is worth it, sometimes it's not. So, like I said, hopefully this video helped you guys out, and no, Eco-Worthy did not send me this battery.
We did actually purchase it. We're we're affiliated with them uh by any means at the time of this video. Maybe we'll sign up for an affiliate program so we can just send you a link to this battery. But like I said, we paid for this battery with our own money.
So nobody sent this to us. Hopefully this video helped you guys out. If you have a any questions, let us know. Have a good day.
Uh I did also want to point out, I was trying to find this battery on their website. Uh and I didn't see it on their website. I think they have another 314 amp hour battery, which is kind of like {quote} new, right? But they still have these batteries on their eBay site.
So I don't know if this battery was like a transition thing. They're trying to go from their 280 amp hour batteries and build the 314s, but build it inside of the same, you know, chassis and platform type deal. So I'm not Maybe it's like a limited run or something like that. I don't know.
Uh like I said, I don't even have a contact over there. So um maybe that's why they're so cheap. I don't know. Uh but they do have a 314 amp hour one, which is just new.
They just launched it according to the website. But this is not on their website. So if you want to get this, you're going to have to go to at least eBay. That's where I found it.
Uh and they are selling it as new. So uh looking at the inside doesn't look like it's terrible by any means, but I'm not a battery expert like I said. But would I buy it again? Answer is definitely yes.
Hopefully this video helped you guys out. Thanks for watching, and we'll see you guys next time.
